Long Island City went up fast, and it went up tall. A tower on the Hunters Point waterfront can hold four hundred apartments, and the amenity floor usually offers somewhere between four and eight machines for all of them. On paper that is a laundry room. In practice it is a queue with a payment card, busiest exactly when you are free, and a dryer that somebody emptied onto a folding table two hours ago. Very few LIC apartments have a washer inside them. The thing that makes this work in a tower is where we meet you. Front desk, package room, mail room or apartment door — tell us which when you book and we keep to it, both ways. A large share of our LIC collections never involve the customer being home, which is the whole point when you leave at eight and get back at seven. Everything is washed on its own: colors and whites separated, never mixed with another resident's laundry, water temperature chosen for the fabric. Oversized pieces are priced per piece rather than by weight, because a shared machine was never going to take them anyway: comforters $20 Twin, $25 Queen, $35 King, pressed sheet sets $30, $38 and $45, duvet covers from $18, blankets from $20, pillowcases from $5. One thing we do not do anywhere in New York is garment dry cleaning — no suits, no dress shirts, no dresses. If you want shirts back pressed and on hangers, that is Wash & Press: $65 for up to 15 lbs, then $4.50 a pound, in 24–72 hours.

Per load, the machines upstairs are cheaper and we will not pretend otherwise. What they cost is your evening: waiting for a free machine, moving the load, folding it at ten. Fifteen pounds — about two full loads — is $45 back in 24–48 hours with none of that. And no amenity machine will take a king comforter.

Fifteen pounds is what $45 buys, not a minimum you have to reach — but a single person sending laundry weekly will usually be under it, which means paying for capacity you did not use. Sending every two weeks instead is the simple fix, and we will tell you if the membership does not make sense for you.
