Comforter and Duvet Cleaning: When to DIY and When to Send It Out

Your home washer probably cannot handle a king comforter. Here is the honest guide to bedding care.

Most home washers max out at about 4.5 cubic feet — enough for a queen sheet set but not enough for a king comforter to actually agitate properly. Overloaded machines skip the wash cycle: your bedding comes out damp, matted, and no cleaner than when it went in.

The rule of thumb: if the comforter fills more than two-thirds of the drum when dry, it is too big for that machine. Down-filled and oversized comforters almost always need a commercial 40+ pound machine.

Ghost Laundry runs comforter and duvet cleaning as a per-item service: Twin $30, Queen $30, King $45. Duvet covers are $18 separately. Turnaround is 48 to 72 hours because we tumble-dry with dryer balls to keep the down evenly distributed.

When to send out no matter the size: after a stain (blood, coffee, wine), after a pet accident, at end-of-season storage prep, or once a year as a baseline. Book at ghostlaundry.com/contact/book-pickup and select "Bedding" as the service type.
