What Laundry Actually Costs in South Florida: Laundromat vs Pickup Service vs Membership
Laundromat, in-unit machines, wash and fold pickup, or a monthly membership — here's what each one really costs per month in Miami and Fort Lauderdale.
Everyone has a number in their head for what laundry costs, and it's almost always the machine price. That's the smallest part of it. Here's the fuller picture for South Florida, and where each option makes sense.
The laundromat
A large-capacity washer in Miami-Dade or Broward runs roughly $4 to $7 depending on the machine size. Dryers are usually $0.25 to $0.50 for 6 to 8 minutes, and a full dry takes 40 to 60 minutes. Call it $3 to $5 per load in drying alone if the machine is decent, more if it isn't.
For a household doing four loads a week:
- Washing: about $20–28
- Drying: about $12–20
- Detergent, softener, dryer sheets: about $8–12 a month
- Monthly total: roughly $140 to $180
Then there's the part nobody prices. Four loads means about three hours at the laundromat, plus the drive, plus folding at home. Three to four hours a week is twelve to sixteen hours a month.
In-unit or building machines
If you have machines in your apartment, your marginal cost is water, electricity and detergent — maybe $25 to $40 a month in Florida, where the dryer is fighting the humidity.
That's clearly the cheapest option, and if you have working in-unit machines and time to run them, no service beats it on price. Most people in South Florida rentals don't have that. Building machines are a different story: usually $2 to $4 a wash, often broken, and always occupied on Sunday.
Per-order wash and fold
Pickup and delivery services in the area generally charge by the pound, with minimums. You send a bag, they weigh it, you pay for that order.
This is the right choice if your volume is irregular — a big catch-up load after a trip, bedding once a season, laundry while your machine is being fixed. You pay only when you use it.
It gets expensive when it becomes a habit. Two or three orders a month at a per-pound rate adds up quickly, and you feel it every time, because you're being quoted every time.
A monthly membership
