How to read care labels
The care label is the small tag inside the neck, side seam, or waistband. It's the manufacturer's official recommendation — and it's legally required in the US to be accurate for at least one safe cleaning method.
- A washtub symbol (a bucket outline) means machine washable
- A circle means dry cleaning is safe
- A circle with a P or F inside indicates which solvent type
- A crossed-out symbol means DO NOT do that method
- "Dry clean only" text means water washing is not recommended
When to break the rules
Sometimes "dry clean only" labels are conservative. Many manufacturers label cotton dress shirts "dry clean only" purely for liability — the shirt is actually fine in cold-water gentle wash. Rule of thumb: if it's 100% cotton or a cotton blend without structure (no shoulder pads, no interfacing), you can usually wash it despite the label. Can I wash a shirt that says 'dry clean only'?
It depends on fabric. Cotton and cotton-blend dress shirts labeled 'dry clean only' are often safe to wash on cold gentle. Wool, silk, and structured garments (with shoulder pads or interfacing) should be dry cleaned as labeled. Text a photo of the label if you're not sure.
How often should I dry clean my suit?
Every 4–5 wears in normal use, or after any noticeable stain or sweat. Over-dry-cleaning wears out the fabric — brushing and spot-cleaning between visits extends the life of the suit.
What about wool sweaters?
