Why Separating Colors Still Matters for Wash Laundry

That dye has to go somewhere, and it usually ends up on your lighter garments. Bold or saturated colors like red, bright orange, and royal blue deserve their own smaller pile, at least for the first few washes when dye bleed is at its worst. Once those vivid pieces have been through several cycles, they usually calm down and can join the darks. This is not complicated science. It is just a habit worth building.

Water temperature plays a supporting role here too. Hot water opens fabric fibers and encourages more dye release, which is why whites can handle hot washes but mixed loads generally should not. Washing darks and colors in cold water reduces bleeding, cuts your energy bill, and is gentler on the fabric overall. If you are going to skip sorting, at the very least default to cold.
